The Hidden Risk: How DVT Can Lead to Limb Loss & What You Can Do About It

Every March, DVT Awareness Month reminds us of the hidden but serious dangers of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)—a condition that can be life-threatening and is one of the leading causes of limb loss.

What Is DVT & Why Should You Care?

DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the legs. If left untreated, it can break loose and cause a pulmonary embolism (PE)—a potentially fatal blockage in the lungs. But what many don’t realize is that DVT can also lead to amputation.

For those with vascular conditions, poor circulation, or limited mobility, DVT can cause severe tissue damage, making amputation the only medical option.

Signs & Symptoms of DVT

🩸 Swelling in one leg (often sudden)
🩸 Pain or tenderness that worsens when walking or standing
🩸 Red or discolored skin around the clot area
🩸 A warm sensation in the affected leg

How to Lower Your Risk

💙 Stay active—even small movements help circulation.
💙 Hydrate to keep your blood flowing smoothly.
💙 Wear compression socks if you have circulation issues.
💙 Know your family history and risk factors.

At Less Leg More Heart, we work with individuals who have faced vascular-related amputations and help them navigate life beyond limb loss. If you or a loved one are at risk for DVT, awareness can be life-saving. Let’s spread the word together!
